Google Maps SEO: how to rank higher on the map.
Most local customers pick from the three businesses Google shows on the map. Google Maps SEO is the work of becoming one of them. SOSSRANK shows you where you rank on the map from points across your area, and what to fix first. Software from $39 a month, or we do the work.
Your map rank is different on every block.
Google weighs distance from the person searching, so there is no single "rank" on Google Maps. SOSSRANK checks your position from a grid of points across your service area, using live Google results, and shows it as a map.

Why good businesses don't show up on the map
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. The fixable gaps are usually the same few things.

What we find most often
- The wrong primary category on your Google Business Profile
- Services, hours or service area missing or out of date
- A website that doesn't match your profile, or has no page for your main services
- Few recent reviews compared with nearby competitors
- Missing or inconsistent listings on Bing, Apple Maps and directories
How Google decides who shows up on the map
Google says local results are based on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known you are, from reviews, links and mentions across the web. Google explains it here.
Distance is why your rank changes from street to street. Checking your rank from your own desk shows you one point. A map grid checks it from many points across your area, so you see where customers find you and where they don't.
Get your Google Business Profile right first
Pick the primary category that matches your main service, then add only the secondary categories you truly offer. Fill in your services, hours, service area, description and photos, and keep them current.
Keep your business name exactly as it appears on your van, your invoices and your sign. Google's guidelines don't allow extra keywords or town names in the name, and profiles that add them can be suspended. Put services in the services list and towns in the service area, where they belong.
If customers don't come to you, Google asks you to hide your address and list the areas you serve instead. You can add up to 20 service areas, and Google recommends keeping the whole area within about two hours' drive of where you're based. Google's service-area rules are short and worth reading once.
Make your website back up your profile
Your website should use the same name, address and phone as your profile, and have a page for each main service and each area you serve. Google and AI assistants compare your site with your profile, and pages that match make you a clearer answer.
Listings on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the main directories for your industry should match too. Apple Maps and some AI assistants rely on them.
Reviews are the part you can grow every week
Steady, recent reviews that mention what you did help with prominence and with choosing. Ask every happy customer with a direct link, and reply to every review.
Google doesn't allow discounts, gifts or payment in exchange for reviews, and it doesn't allow asking only your happy customers. The review policy is clear on both. The safe, effective habit is to ask every customer, every time, in the same way.
Measure it like for like
Rankings on the map aren't one number. They change with the searcher's location, so a single check from your office tells you almost nothing about the rest of your area.
SOSSRANK checks your position from a grid of points across your service area, for the searches you care about, and saves each scan. When you change something, the next scan uses the same points, so you can see what moved and where. That's how you tell a real gain from noise, and how you decide what to fix next.
How it works
- 1Scan
We map your rank across your service area for the searches that matter in your trade, audit your website and Google profile, and check what AI assistants say about you.
- 2Plan
You get one list of fixes, ranked by impact, in plain English.
- 3Fix
Work through the list yourself in the app, or we update your profile, pages, listings and review process for you.
- 4Re-measure
We check the same map points again, so every change is compared like for like.
How fast things move depends on your market and your competitors. What doesn't change: every fix shows up on your map, measured from the same points each time, so you see what moved and when.

Questions we hear
What is Google Maps SEO?
It's the work of improving how your business ranks in Google Maps and the map box in Google search. It's mostly your Google Business Profile, your website, your listings and your reviews.
Can someone pay Google to rank higher on the map?
No. Google says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map, but the map results themselves are earned.
Do you work with businesses outside Maryland?
Yes. The app works for businesses anywhere in the US, and done-for-you work is done remotely, with everything visible in your dashboard. We're based in Germantown, Maryland.
How fast will I see more calls?
It depends on your market and your competitors, and Google says no one can pay for a better ranking. What you get is proof: you see the change on your map, measured from the same points every time.
